A former Surf Bus customer is making waves on her surfing journey.
Kira Lee from Manchester UK jumped on the Australian Surfing and Camping Tour during a Winter trip around Brisbane in 2025.
“My days on the Surf Bus were some of my absolute favourites in Australia,” Lee says.
“I could already surf before my trip, but the tour let me tick off some of the locations on my East Coast bucket list as well as some of the most famous spots in the world.
“All seven of us on my trip were solo travellers and we got on really well.
“Outside of our time in the water, we all had a blast cooking together, exploring the towns we stopped at, spotting wildlife, going on sunset walks, stargazing and camping in nature under the stars each night.
Prior to her stint on the Australian Surf Camp on wheels, the 25-year-old was a high-level competitor in BMX learning how to surf with her dad.
“My family would take our camper van to surf spots in the UK for school holidays,” Lee says.
“Mainly the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales and Crowed Bay in Devon.
“Since moving to Australia on a working holiday visa in March 2025 I’ve been able to surf super regularly, and am now really starting to feel my progression.”
Since her Surf Bus trip Kira moved to Yamba which is one of the stops on the ASB Summer Tour Schedule where she found a job and the local board riders competition.
“I stumbled upon a meeting of the Clarence Head Longboarders,” she said.
“The club meet on the last Sunday of every month at Turners Beach for a friendly long boarding competition.
“I’d never seen competitive surfing before, so it was really cool to just see how it all worked before deciding that it was something I would like to have a crack at.”
By the time the next competition rolled around Lee was ready to go.
“At my first competition there was a full heat of women surfers!” she said.
“I met so many cool surfer ladies, and it was an amazing supportive vibe – even though we were technically competing against each other we were all cheering each other in the lineup.
“The girls I met in the water that day became familiar faces, and I continued to bump into them in the water whilst I surfed between comps.”
Kira’s epic Australian surfing journey now continues as she makes the move to beautiful Tasmania.
